Many will tell you in its simplest form Business Continuity is proactive and Disaster Recovery is reactive. BC speaks to how you plan to ‘go on’ after a disruptive event. DR has more to do with the metrics, timeline and data required for you to recover from a disruptive event.
Consider the possibility of your home catching on fire. BC plan would include, where you are going to stay temporarily, enough insurance or savings to purchase a new home if required and a communication plan for letting everyone know you are okay and where to visit/send the mail. A DR plan would stipulate how much of the house could burn before you would need another place. And if only the top floor burned could everyone survive in just the first floor. How long would it take to replace the contents of the home and how much would that cost. Would the kids be okay with sleeping bags if we couldn’t get beds right away…etc.
